The Great Western Route Modernisation

Customer Objective

The Great Western Route Modernisation (GWRM) programme is a major upgrade of the Great Western Mainline between Maidenhead in the east, through to Swansea in the west. The programme will provide a step change in increased train performance and enhanced passenger experience.

Linbrooke Project Scope

The project is complex due to the many inter-disciplinary interfaces present, but also due to the fact that there are numerous active projects in the Bristol Parkway area including an ongoing major re-signalling project.

As part of the GRIP 4 we developed and provided an Earthing and Bonding Strategy to address the following:

OLE Traction Earthing – connections to RSC, EW, DNO, track-to-track connections (a continuation of the adjacent Route Sections)

All lineside DNO Supplies used/effected by the enhancement project except those being utilised for points heating only – lineside junction lighting and such like

Bristol Parkway Station – works to all station equipment and furniture

Other applicable lineside equipment

As part of the GRIP 5 works we are responsible undertaking surveys of the route to identify all existing structures, equipment and services that require to be bonded in accordance with Network Rail standards. The output from these surveys has formed the basis of the route specific detailed bonding design. As a minimum the surveys have identified all existing structures, equipment and services that require bonding. We have also interfaced with third party equipment such a the New Hitachi Train Depot to ensure there protection of Network Rail equipment. We are providing a comprehensive and interdisciplinary integrated approach to Earthing and Bonding an existing non-electrified system to bring it to the safety requirement of electrifying the area.

“Linbrooke are pleased to be involved in the implementation of this landmark electrification project in the West of England and Wales and we are successfully enabling a fleet of new high speed trains to vastly improve the travel and comfort of passengers.”
- Damian Power, Project Director
