Maghull North New Station Commissioned into service

The key objective of this project was to provide a new station on the Liverpool to Ormskirk lines between Town Green and Ormskirk stations. The two new 135-metre-long platforms have the capability to accommodate new six-car 507/508 type rolling stock train sets and will support the wider journey improvement works. The strategic objectives are to provide an improved accessibility in the North area of Maghull, offer a new public transport option in the area and improve linkages from Liverpool and the wider City region into the housing and employment development sites East of Maghull.

Facilities at the new station include: –

  • A staffed station building and a ticket office with passenger toilet.
  • Passenger waiting facilities on the platform.
  • Step-free access with lifts and a bridge to, from and between both platforms, as well as the station building.
  • 156-space car park with blue badge, motorcycle parking, and cycle storage.
  • Pedestrian and cycle routes from School Lane and Park Lane to the station and bus stop on School Lane.
  • Future provision for electric vehicle charging points.

Network Rail undertook the scheme on behalf of Mersey travel, using the contractor Buckingham Group and the project works commenced in September 2017.

Linbrooke Services Limited on behalf of Mersey Rail, Network Rail, and Buckingham Group undertook the Signalling and Communications Installation comprising of new power, signalling and communications cables and connections, new lineside equipment location cases including full SSI integration and a newly positioned lightweight LED repeater signal. Linespeed changes and splitting of track circuits protecting Maghull MCB (CCTV) Level Crossing also formed part of the asset changes introduced onto the line of route.

The signalling installation and construction stage was carried out over a period of 12 weeks followed up with 2 weeks of equipment pre-testing works and a 27-hour weekend possession for final Commissioning and Entry into Service.

Linbrooke Services successfully commissioned over the weekend of 17thand 18thJune 2018 with all new and affected signalling and associated communication equipment entered into service more than 3 hours ahead of plan.

This whole project delivery is a remarkable success for Linbrooke, as the GRIP 4&5 design for the scheme was undertaken in-house by Linbrooke Design Services Limited over a period of 18 months prior to construction and installation works starting on site.

Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram will declare the station officially open at an opening ceremony which is due to take place Tomorrow, Friday the 22nd of June. The new Maghull North station will be the 2,565th railway station on the national rail network.
