Mark Peck, Linbrooke's Rail Telecoms Technical Expert is celebrating his 40-year anniversary in the rail industry. We are excited to share with you his remarkable journey that spans over four decades.
Early Beginnings: A Youthful Start
Mark’s journey in the rail industry began at the tender age of 17. Fresh out of school, he joined British Rail (BR) as a Trainee Technician. His entry into the industry was facilitated by a BR Youth Training Scheme, a government initiative designed to equip young people with practical skills and experience. After eight months on this scheme, Mark received a call for an interview with BR, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Career Path: From British Rail to Linbrooke
Mark’s career as a Telecoms Rail Engineer is a testament to his dedication and technical prowess. His ability to adapt to new technologies and his commitment to maintaining high standards have made him a respected figure in the industry. As he continues his journey with Linbrooke, his legacy of excellence in rail telecommunications continues to inspire his colleagues and the next generation of engineers. His career has spanned several decades and seen him work with multiple companies, each transition marking a new chapter in his professional life:
British Rail/Thales (17 years): Mark’s initial years were with BR, which later became privatised. During this transition, he was transferred to Racal, which eventually became Thales. His tenure here lasted 17 years, during which he honed his skills and adapted to the evolving landscape of the rail industry.
Siemens Mobility (7 years): Following redundancy from Thales, Mark joined Siemens Mobility. His seven years with Siemens were marked by significant contributions to various projects, further solidifying his expertise in the field.
Network Rail (2 years): Mark’s next move was to Network Rail, where he spent two years. This period allowed him to gain insights into the operational aspects of the rail network and contribute to its maintenance and development.
Linbrooke (13.5 years): Currently, Mark is with Linbrooke, continuing to apply his extensive engineering knowledge and experience to the rail industry.
Adapting to Technological Changes
The field of telecommunications has seen rapid advancements, and Mark has continually adapted to these changes. From the early days of analog systems to the current digital and fibre-optic technologies, he has kept pace with the evolving landscape.
While Mark humbly notes that he hasn’t received any formal awards or recognitions, his career itself is a testament to his dedication and resilience. Surviving and thriving through the privatisation of British Rail, adapting to new roles and companies, and continuously contributing to the industry for 40 years is an achievement in itself.
Reflections on a Distinguished Career
Mark’s story is one of perseverance and passion. From a young trainee technician to a seasoned professional, his journey reflects the dynamic nature of the rail industry and the opportunities it offers for growth and development. His experiences serve as an inspiration to young professionals entering the field, demonstrating that a career in rail can be both fulfilling and enduring.
Ben Lynch, Managing Director, Rail Said “The rail industry achieves many great things which leaves legacies for generations. Most people in the industry only get the opportunity to contribute a small part of this during their career. For Mark to be able to surpass 40 years of contribution is incredible! The industry owes legends like Mark a great deal of appreciation.
I will never under estimate the value of people and Marks 40 years of experience and contribution is a true asset to our business. Well done Mark, and thank you for everything you done for Linbrooke and the wider industry in your fabulous career (so far!)."
